What is “FUE”?

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a method of hair transplantation during the application of which individual hair follicles are removed from the donor area using a special tool, and afterwards they are implanted in the target problem areas.

The first step is to extract the hair follicles, one by one, from the donor area with the help of a micromotor and micro-punch, creating extraction sites with dimensions which vary from 0.7mm to 0.9mm.

Using the “FUE” technique, the extracted hair follicles are then transplanted into the canals that have been created at the area where the implantation will be performed.

Opening the canals is the most important part of the procedure: Full and natural coverage can only be achieved if the canals are created following the patient’s natural angle and direction of hair growth. These canals directly affect the density of the transplanted hair as well as the quality of the final result.

This is why sapphire blades are so vital to a successful “FUE” hair transplant. Sapphire blades allow the surgeon to create very fine canals – from 1.4mm to 1.5mm.

“Sapphire FUE” vs. “Classic FUE”

What are the factual benefits of sapphire blades when compared to conventional steel blades, throughout a “FUE” hair transplant?

The main advantage of sapphire blades is that they are significantly sharper compared to steel blades.

First, sharper edges allow for finer cuts. Smaller incisions mean the surgeon can create more canals. More canals mean more transplanted hair, which in turn means dense and natural final result.

Smaller incisions also greatly reduce the risk of bleeding, both during and after the procedure. In addition, transplanted hair follicles located in finer canals cannot move or fall out during the healing process.

During the 6-7 hour long hair transplant process, both the donor area and the target recipient area are placed under local anesthesia.

Recovery and results

While hair transplantation with “Sapphire FUE” is a minimally invasive and low-risk procedure, it represents some post-operative side effects.

  • As with any hair transplant technique, pain and swelling are expected in the following days. But everything is normal and these symptoms go away a few days after surgery.
  • Over the next 3-4 weeks, it is also normal and expected to experience a slight fall of a part of the transplanted hair. This does not affect hair growth in the future as their roots are already planted in the scalp.

The first growth of the new hair usually occurs about 2 months after the procedure, while the final results can be seen approximately 11 months after the procedure.
